How Does the Mind Function?

Our mind receives any event using the five senses. These five senses are – Visual sense, auditory sense, feeling, smell and taste. Usually, the mind uses three senses – visual, auditory and feeling to receive an event. But we do not perceive an event as such.

Imagine that you are going to see Eiffel tower with your friends. Once you are back from the sight-seeing if I ask you about the Eiffel tower, will all of you narrate the same experience? Obviously not.
Though the objective event- i.e. Eiffel tower is the same here for all of you, but the perception of each one of you will be different. This perception is based on past experiences and our beliefs and this is unique for everyone. This perception is nothing but our inner reality which is different from the actual reality.

This inner reality creates the state of mind which can be positive or negative.
Love, confidence, flexibility, happiness, togetherness, wellness etc, are the positive states whereas hate, anxiety, depression, frustration, confusion, loneliness and illness are the negative states.

A positive state represents our resolved issues while negative state represents our unresolved issues. When we are in our positive state, our body releases positive hormones – Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin and endorphins. These hormones are happiness hormones.

When we are in a negative state, stress hormones – cortisol and adrenalin are released. Because of these stress hormones, we move into the state of stress, anxiety, depression etc. We are not able to take our decisions properly, we remain in the state of confusion, nervousness, and frustration. Because of these, not only our health suffers but our relationships, career, success, finances and self-image are also affected.
